Nature does not discriminate against age. There is an abundance of herbs and essential oils that are helpful to children. It varies by culture, as parents in Asia are giving herbal teas to their children by the age of 1 and other countries wait until they are past the age of 5. Whatever you decide to do, I have chosen a few of my favorite herbs and oils that I have given my own child at a young age. Herbs like peppermint and ginger are great digestive aids, whereas chamomile and lemon balm are fantastic for the nervous system. Marshmallow root and mullein leaf are gentle yet effective for coughs, and children love the taste of elderberries, which will boost up their immune system. Catnip can be sipped in the evening to help them fall asleep and ashwagandha can help reduce and manage their stress. These gentle yet effective herbs are great tools to have in your home if a situation arises.
Essential oils are highly concentrated, and some can be toxic to children, so it is of the upmost importance to understand the safety of them prior to using them on your child. There are however several oils that work beautifully on children. Frankincense, marjoram, and eucalyptus are ones that can be diluted in a carrier oil and used on the chest to help with coughs and colds. Mindful Mixtures created a blend for children called “Bedtime” to help your child relax and get ready to sleep. This delicious aroma consists of lavender, roman chamomile, sweet orange, and vanilla. Oils like peppermint and basil can help children focus and others like lemon and grapefruit can lift their spirits. All essential oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil and you would only need 1 or 2 drops of the essential oil to be effective.
Empowering your young with the knowledge of how nature can heal is not only life-changing for them, but it gives them confidence that they can have tools in their own home or backyard to make themselves feel better. Take advantage of nature’s gifts. They are there to help us through the tough times.
Be well!
